They worked in administration, management, outreach services, and Centre activities. Here are just a hand-full of the couples who helped make COA the resilient and inclusive organisation we enjoy today. There were many more and we appreciate and respect them all for the time they gave, the chutzpah they showed in the face of adversity, and the manpower they provided to help COA reach 40 continuous years of service to Sydney’s Jewish community.

In the beginning The Tasmanian “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act” was introduced on the 11th December 1877. Just seven months later on 19 July 1878, a group of concerned citizens, who called themselves ‘animal protectionists’, formed the first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The new 1877 Act set out to ‘…protect horses, cattle, donkeys, sheep, pigs, goats, cats, dogs and other domestic animals from being “cruelly and unnecessarily” flogged, beaten, overdriven, overridden, overloaded, abused, tortured or otherwise ill-treated.’

When animals are let down by their owners, left helpless, traumatised and alone, they rely on RSPCA WA to step in and give them a second chance at life, love and happiness. Since 1892, RSPCA WA has worked tirelessly to prevent animal cruelty. We have rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed animals of many kinds and given them a second chance. We have educated the community and lobbied the Government to promote animal welfare and prevent cruelty.

As we move towards a society which no longer tolerates the euthanasia of rehomable animals, SAFE branches continue to play a vital role in this shift. When SAFE first began in Karratha in 2003, euthanasia of healthy, rehomable pets was still regarded as a necessary evil by many people. Since then, there has been much positive discussion and growth, and this mindset has now changed.
